There are so many companies out there that provide outstanding services or products that have branding that doesn't show it.
Design is something that allows a company or individual to create an emotional connection with the customer or client. Think of brands like Innocent or even Apple. Apple Inc provide great high quality products such as the iPhone and iPad. But, these are not necessarily new or innovative products in terms of technology; touch screen, voice recognition have been around for decades, not nearly as refined but they have been around. The innovation of Apples products is in industrial design, interface and marketing.
Many phones from the likes of Samsung and HTC running Google's Android OS are much more powerful and flexible, yet the iPhone is still the biggest selling smartphone in the world today. There is no doubt that this has been achieved predominantly via marketing and design.
People connect with Apple products. They are simple and intuitive so people connect to them in a way that is long lasting. Every design decision, from how the phones feel in your hand, to the user interface, in the tv commercials, right down to the design of the box it comes in. This is just as vital as the phone it self working as it should.
You must connect with your customers through design.
